Intalok Wins Sustainability Awardby Intalok - Solid Timber Buildings Ltd

Entering the Sustainable Business Network’s
Get Sustainable Challenge 2007 was a natural progression for Intalok's
commitment to sustainability. Since winning as an emerging business, it
has given the company even more to strive for. Intalok is already part of the way down the
track to sustainability in that we build homes from natural timber. Timber is
our only truly renewable construction material, obtained from sustainable
forests. The timber we use in our houses is traceable back to the plantation
it was harvested from. Timber is a low embodied energy resource as the
energy required to produce it is solar (sunlight) and timber removes Co² from
the atmosphere as it grows. It’s vital to Intalok that sustainability is
a part of our business, in both the materials we use and our business
practices. Products that we purchase during the construction of Intalok
homes are accessed for sustainability impact. An example being to use
timber weatherboard instead of high embodied energy cost products like fibre
cement weatherboard. We use laminated timber beams and posts in our
product instead of steel which has high embodied energy costs, creates massive
amounts of Co² during production and comes from a finite resource. We are also sorting our waste on the building
sites to recycle waste where possible. We separate any timber to be
re-used and at the end of the life cycle this is used as an energy source. As a member of a small cluster group of
solid wall building companies, we are embarking on an advertising campaign that
will raise the public awareness of how timber use can help with climate change
impact. All of our new buildings have an inherent “green” feature because they
are constructed from solid timber. For more information, please visit our
